Hi guys,
So the past two days have been my first two working days. I am following Clare during my internship, who works in one of the four cattery's. Tomorrow I will be with someone else as she has different days off than I do. We started off with a quiet day on Tuesday. None of the cats needed real cleaning, or veterinarian checks and there were no new cats coming in or cats leaving. Although I did see how a viewing works and how they make people look for a new cat to rehome out of the shelter. Furthermore I got to really work with the cats and get to know their problems and anxieties. We have a total of 12 cat units in the cattery, and we have a total of 13 cats right now. There are some pairs in there who cannot be separated or are not separated because they have less problems together.
I got to socialise with a few of the cats and do the regular litter cleanings and feeding. Some cats were very calm and like attention, but they all have some sort of anxiety because they have been abandoned or abused or any other reason that causes them distress around humans. For example there is a pair where one of the cats is very nice and likes attention a lot while the other one is very scared but they motivate each other to come out and this is just one of many achievements these cats make everyday. The second day was a bit of a busier day, one of the cats, Seamus, got to go to a new home, but he was only scheduled to leave at 3. So we cleaned in the morning and fed all the cats and I got time to socialise them again while Clare did some paper work. But all of a sudden a lot of new cats came in. There were 5 new and very scared cats at intake and we got to take two into our cattery. The units that are empty are always ready and set up for new cats to get in straightaway so that was not a big problem. The cats were very scared and we needed to give them some rest, we close at 4 and then leave at around half past 4.
There are some minor differences I saw in the host family as well the past 3 days that I've been here. They do not have a very big house and live in a very small village that does not have any shops or bus stops, luckily they will bring me to a bus stop or railway station closeby whenever I want to visit anything. They also bring one of their children, the youngest little boy Sami, who is turning 3 Friday to nursery all day, which happens in Holland as well. But their daughter Saskia, who is about 6 years old I think, to school. And it is not a private school or anything but they do just stop the car in front of the school, literally all the daughter would have to do is step out and 2 steps further get into the school yard, they wait for her to be picked up. The child is in the back seat, a teacher will come and open the door wearing a safety vest, and then taking her into the yard, where they wait to get into the building in groups. Quite a bit different than in Holland! The children are also raised Finnish, as their mum, my host, comes from Finland and did her internship where I am right now as well! She stayed twice for 6 months as part of her course and then decided to move here. She talks Finnish to the children while the dad talks English. So whenever we are in the car (me, Katja my host and Saskia and Sami) they will talk english and she will answer in Finnish to them. I do not understand a thing, but I do know now that "mitte" means : pardon? and "cotta" means home/house. Maybe I will be trilingual afterwards, Dutch, English and Finnish haha!
Well I am having a great time and will now plan my trips on my days off to Cambridge, London and Peterborough or anywhere else!

De afgelopen 2 dagen waren mijn eerste twee werkdagen. Ik volg Clare tijdens mijn stage, die werkt in een van de 4 kattenunits. Morgen loop ik met iemand anders mee omdat Clare andere vrije dagen heeft dan ik. Het begon met een rustige dag dinsdag. Er moest niks echt grondig schoongemaakt worden en er waren geen dierenartsen controles nodig of nieuwe katten die weggingen/binnenkwamen. Ik heb wel gezien hoe een bezichtiging werkt als iemand een nieuwe kat wil uit het dierenasiel hier.
Ik heb een aantal katten aandacht gegeven en de standaard kattenbakken geleegd en de katten gevoerd. Sommige katten zijn heel kalm en houden van aandacht maar anderen zijn heel bang omdat ze mishandeld of achtergelaten zijn geweest en daarom erg bang zijn voor mensen. Er is bijvoorbeeld een paar waarvan er 1 heel bang is en 1 totaal niet, zo stimuleert de een de ander om er ook uit te komen en dit gebeurde dan ook. De katten maken zo veel vooruitgang en vinden sneller een nieuw thuis.
De tweede dag was iets drukker want Seamus, een van de katten, mocht naar huis. Hij zou pas rond 3 uur weggaan dus we hebben ’s ochtends alle units schoongemaakt en de katten gevoerd en opnieuw wat aandacht gegeven terwijl Clare wat papierwerk voor Seamus deed. Maar ineens kwamen er rond half 4 5 nieuwe katten binnen. Ze waren heel erg bang en er kwamen er 2 bij ons op de afdeling. De lege units staan altijd helemaal schoon en ingericht klaar voor nieuwe katten dus dit was geen probleem. We sloten rond 4 en zijn rond half 5 weggegaan.
Er zijn ook nog best wel wat verschillen te zien in het gastgezin. Ze hebben niet een heel erg groot huis en wonen in een heel klein dorpje wat geen enkele winkel of bushalte heeft. Gelukkig brengen ze me naar een bushalte of treinstation dichtbij als ik ergens heen wil. Ze brengen iedere dag hun zoontje van bijna 3 naar de opvang, hij heet Sami en ze brengen hun dochter, van denk ik 6 jaar oud, Saskia, naar school. Alleen dit gaat iets anders. Ze parkeren de auto voor de school en wachten daar. Terwijl als ze uit zou stappen ze op de stoep staat en het dan 2 passen is voor ze op het schoolplein is. Nee ze wachten netjes tot er een lerares komt die doet de autodeur open en haalt het kind eruit, de leraressen dragen zelfs een geel veligheidshesje. Heel anders dan hier, want het is gewoon een standaard school, niets bijzonders. De kinderen worden ook Fins opgevoed. De moeder komt uit Finland, en heeft ook stage gelopen waar ik nu zit, 2 keer een half jaar. Ze vond het toen zo leuk dat ze er nu nog werkt en hier woont. Zij praat Fins tegen de kinderen en haar man Engels. Dus als we in de auto zitten (Katja mijn gastvrouw, Sami, Saskia en ik) dan praten de kinderen Engels en antwoordt zij in het Fins. Ik versta er niets van maar weet nu wel dat “mitte” : pardon betekent en “cotta” huis/thuis. Misschien wordt ik zo ooit nog wel drietalig, Fins, Nederlands en Engels!
Ik heb het in ieder geval erg naar mijn zin en ga nu mijn tripjes voor mijn vrije dagen naar Cambridge, London en Peterborough plannen, of iets anders leuks

Klinkt goed en grappig met dat Fins. Ga je nog Engels met een Fins accent spreken dadelijk.
